The Daily Dad

Critical advice for men without fathers

This Daily Dad newsletter will go out to subscribers every day for free, offering one piece of received, lived or invented wisdom for men without fathers.

What is the Daily Dad?

I was lucky to grow up with a great single mum who gave her two boys a wonderful childhood. Nonetheless growing up without a father is hard in a number of ways:

- it’s hard on our mums and that’s tough to see

- you don’t have a positive male role-model

- you suffer from a recklessness and lack of guard rails

- we have a healthy suspicion of but keen interest in men dispersing wisdom

But above all:

- no one was there to give you that rare, fatherly pearl of wisdom, when it mattered most

Until now, because that’s precisely why I started this newsletter. It will attempt to collate the best, most-piercing and instructive wisdoms and insights from my reading, observation and rigorous research into pivotal knowledge, that men without fathers most likely never received.

It applies equally to men (and women) who did/do have fathers who might be interested in getting some more support.

My ideas will derive from but are not limited to: books, chats with friends, sports, other dads, film, academia, philosophy, mythology, gaming, music, conversations with strangers on trains, and my barber.

Every single day––365 days of the year––I will distill one shot of fatherly wisdom that you can digest with your morning coffee.

What can you expect?

Men are always looking for fatherly advice wherever we can get it. Here are a few hints to the pieces from week one:

- an innocuous quote from a best-friend that makes sense of why we are not where we want to be in life

- a revelatory line from a movie-father that has far-reaching consequences for our personal character

- a positive affirmation from a sports manager that empowers a positive mindset

My ideas will come from a host of sources. Some weeks there will be a different idea every day, others I might serialise wisdom from one book, a real-life personality or a movie.

What’s the community like?

The Daily Dad will be a safe, welcoming place, like a a friendly lounge where a bunch of guys can have a chat and swap tidbits of advice they never received in-person. For now, the comments section will serve as a forum for discussion, suggestions for pieces or guest-posts––and I hope once we have grown––a place to plan in-person events or potentially local Chapters, where we can meet or mentor others like us.

Who are you?

I am a professional writer and filmmaker and it has taken me a couple of decades to learn that it’s better to write from the heart. I am a man who grew up without a father, but the beauty of today’s wide media reach, is that a niche can be attractive to people from all walks of life. So it comes as no surprise that anyone––women, men with fathers, the young or those with grand kids––are all most, wholeheartedly welcome too.

But in my heart of hearts I am writing this newsletter for you: that guy who every Father’s Day wonders deep down what a hug from a man who loves him unconditionally feels like, how a choice fatherly word of advice sounds like, or if a “Well played, Son,” might’ve filled his belly with sunshine.

Look, we can’t go back, but with our newsletter we can try to fill some of these blanks together, so each year we’ll feel a little less uncertain about who we are, and become more confident in becoming the man we want to be, or to complete the beautiful circle, the good father we can all become.

Thank you. Now go live your life!
